Belle Island Village and the Knoxville Zoo
announced plans for "Otter Cove", a permanent habitat
that will be home to five North American River Otters.
"Otter Cove" was the third major attraction announced
for Belle Island Village. The exhibit will feature a 3,000
square foot outdoor habitat which will include pools, water
falls, viewing areas and stages for presentations and
educational events, and a 1,000 square foot area for otter
sleeping quarters, kitchen and medical care facility.
In
addition to the exhibit, the Knoxville Zoo will have its own
"otter cove", a 1,700 square foot store featuring zoo
merchandise, displays, an educational areas, demonstrations and
interactive exhibits. Belle Island Village will be
building a little bit of nature right here in Pigeon Forge and
making it home to one of the most fun-loving animals that call
the Great Smoky Mountains Home. The Knoxville Zoo will be
presenting shows to educate and entertain daily at the exhibit,
said Jim Vlna, Executive Director of The Knoxville Zoo.
Belle
Island Village and the Knoxville Zoo have been working on plans
to not only build a great otter facility Belle Island but to
build a breeding facility for otters at the Knoxville Zoo.
Belle Island will be a contributor that faciliy and help the
American Zoo and Aquarium Associations Species Survival Plan for
otters. Even though otters are coming back strongly in the
Smokies, it was not too long ago when otters were not to be
found in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Tennessee
Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) has worked hard to make sure
that otters will be a part of our future.
